I always wanted to try its super fast flash sync speed, but I guess I won't be able to find out until I fix it. So I only lubricated the red wheel and did not lubricate the white wheel (covered behind the metal plate. I'm getting ready to open mine up now. thanks for all your contributions to the solution. weblink

I can't see anything holding it up. But silicon grease might be better as it will stick longer to the wheels. There is a small red gear wheel that drives the shutter. My D40x suddenly got this problem the other night and I was afraid I was screwed.

The WD designation stands for "water displacement" and that is absolutely the only thing that WD40 does well. Any comments I could use on the shop would be appreciated. I could only spray the white wheel (it's not visible behind the plate.) I could only do the red wheel. The sub zero temperature is about -2°C. This can result in different shutter speeds; some of which might trigger the problem.Al least that's what I would guess.
