What constitutes a “shutter error”? It cost me $169 including shipping and taxes. I noted that the gear seems to turn quite easily (through several revolutions) for some mirror positions and but for other positions. hey robert, i was thinking the same, to put a hole under my d40 then turn the red gear whenever the error returns.

I used to get that every so often with the 18-135mm lens, I only needed to reattach the lens again to get it to work again. Same thing for my 70-300 AF-S!I've decided to live with this compromise and just remember what lenses will/won't work. Most mineral oils will affect plastics actually. You will also need to remove the back of the camera before the plate can be removed. It's trying to work by taking 1 pix but then I get the error again. I can only access the red wheel to lubricate, that may have an affect on my length of fix. I will try to repair according to the thread. The D600 I think is rated for 150,000 shots. Many thanks!
This feature is not available right now. I started getting these “shutter error, press shutter release” messages. May another D40 RIP. If that didn't work, I'd start saving for a repair.
