If your lens has a mechanical aperture ring, rotate the aperture to its smallest opening, or highestf-number - normally marked in orange. Answer is really simple - The camera requires that any acceptable lens be set at the smallest aperture for automatic exposure. When I put it on the camera the display shows 'fEE', which is supposed to be "Lens aperture ring is not set to minimum aperture" (which, it is).

The lens is also on Manual Mode? TL;DR: the D70s can't read the aperture from the lens ring, it needs to have the aperture locked in a known setting so the body can set the aperture. You can use the aperture ring on the lens if you would prefer, that is how I prefer to change aperture settings assuming of course that the lens has an aperture check over here FEE error message 2.

The OP has already understood that the aperture should be locked at the "colored" setting, and this didn't fix the problem.
