I was starting to get really annoyed that my rather expensive camera was giving me this error constantly.

  • It took me some time to work this out on a D80 I used to have.
  • Anyway, I changed lenses, removed battery, memory card, reset to factory settings (with qual +/-) I was able to get it working once by playing with the focusing featuring and then

  • Not too long after I started testing, the screen occasionally showed a blinking Err.

Starting today, about every third or forth photo fails to complete the shutter cycle (it seems to stick half way) and an error message will appear on the lcd display. I have the camera set to take single shots not continueous, so I wouldn't be able to take a "burst" of shots, Just one shot everytime I depress the shutter release sorry that's all I got.

Put new battery in and get this code….tried every thing I could think of to try and could not get rid of Err code…..changed to manual focus, clicked shutter….VIOLA functioning camera! This solved the problem.Now I found your post. Further, as recommended, i had also turnoff my cam and w/drawn its sdcard and battery for an hour but for naught. Nikon D80 Err R04 I changed lens countless times and even did free lensing and no more ERROR.

I am looking at the long motor and the gears it moves up to the lever that pushes the aperture lever in lenses and the lever that loads the shutter mechanism I cannot remember if it happen when I switched on the camera or during a taking photos. It's something else; perhaps the contact/s or the contact strip is damaged internally?I suppose the next question is whether or not this merits fixing. Any Idears, what could be the Problem. It just saved me from sending away my D3s on service. A little later the D300 I also used (with the Nikon 17-55) also had this problem. Later it got to the point that I could not take any photos.
