SO, if the pins are slightly being displaced in the device then the eject mechanism is also putting a load on the pins. If that is the case r17 signifies that the buffer has space for 17 shots BUT is still awaiting your input - which has become impeded by the AF's indecision. That's why it seems to me like the contacts in the camera are malfunctioning.
