Thanks for the suggestion,That worked and I am puttingthe cash back in my wallet.It wasn't as difficult as I thoughtit would be to completely dismantlethe camera and put it back together.Have I think it has more noise as the lens moves, so how long it will last is the question. i'd rather doing it my way. I used my fingernail on the little plastic protector to pull the lens out. if it dropped on the extended lens then its likely a gear was broken or knocked out of place .. If this does not help, then we regretthe camera must be sent to our Nikon Service department as there are no user serviceable parts on Nikon Coolpix cameras.
