Tap the padded USB cover repeatedly on a hard surface to try to remove any stubborn dirt particles that might have jammed the lens. When I turn it on the lens come out the lens error message shows and the camera shuts off. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. I found that the spring for the batteries had gone a bit down. First here's a video summary of most of these fixes, and following that a detailed text description of the fixes.
