Another effective method of fixing lens error messages is by placing the camera flat on its back on a flat surface with the lens pointed at the ceiling. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in "no heat" setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum (careful with this one).
While you are pressing and holding the shutter button down, press the power button. Some cameras are fairly robust, and can withstand being dropped on their nose, while others will break simply by being powered on inside of a close-fitting case. The camera will attempt to autofocus with the lens extended which might be able to set the lens barrel guide pins back in their slots and fix the problem. Otherwise, I'll likely just give up on it.

For how long, I don't know... oh yea, I also can't turn it off before it powers off.
