If you use the manual mode, you won't get the fEE error message at any aperture, but you won't get auto exposure either. This part is 1-1/2" long and very thin. Yeah! You will hear a "click" when the lens is locked in place. https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2605/~/what-does-the-fee-or-f---error-message-displayed-on-an-slr-camera-mean%3F

For testing, I had changed it to color matrix, and with that change, the problems started.

There is some merit to this continous shot action. Newer SLRs and DSLR control aperture via the body, so these older lenses must be stopped all the way down in order to be used. Hope it helps!Question. Just purchased a used Tamron 18-270 to run on my D90.

Five other lenses worked perfectly on the D200. Thanks. Press the lens release button located to the left of the lens when the camera is viewed from the top, then rotate the lens clock-wise to dismount the lens as shown Nothing LOOKS wrong in the camera lens mount area. The communication is mechanical; the D7000 uses the lens' AI indexing ridge, the D90 uses the lens' EE-servo tab.

Answer is really simple - The camera requires that any acceptable lens be set at the smallest aperture for automatic exposure. Half the time it went away when I changed the lens but it came back again after I changed lens. The F-- error message is indicating the camera and lens are not communicating.
