Nikon D70 Fee Error Message
One thing I have noticed though is I had previously gone into the 'none CPU lens data' menu and set one for my old Nikon 35mm f/2 fixed manual lens. I put the lens back on and fired away with different apwrture settings and the problem went away. Nikon Aperture Locking Switch
Your 24-70 won't have anything engaging with the aperture follower tab, so this may be a difference between the two lenses. Now, did it fix the Err error? If the problem only occurs occasionally and intermittently, the lens pins and/ or camera contacts may be dirty. - I don't have any other "D" lenses laying around.
- Look at the position and condition of the little black plastic tab around the top of the camera's lens mount.

I shipped it off to Nikon today... Newer SLRs and DSLR control aperture via the body, so these older lenses must be stopped all the way down in order to be used. So far it's ok, but it's so off and on I don't know when it could mess up again. I've had a reply from Nikon who say try to twist the aperture ring back and forward a few times. One funny detail that added to the confusion: The two lenses that needed cleaning (AF-S 85/1.4 and 50/1.4G) worked well on my D7k even before they were cleaned. It's something else; perhaps the contact/s or the contact strip is damaged internally?I suppose the next question is whether or not this merits fixing.
The error code went away and the pop up flash works also. Do you need more help?
